SLETH’s transformation and expansion of The DGI House marks a significant shift in the architectural and urban landscape in the city center of Aarhus. Through an ambitious redevelopment, the project redefines the role of The DGI House, turning it into a dynamic hub where sports, culture, and urban life merge. The vision is to create a more open and engaging space, integrating the building into the city’s pulse and strengthening urban cohesion.
The DGI House is more than just a sports facility; it is a space that unites the community. Housed in one of Aarhus’ largest historic industrial halls – once the central workshop of the Danish State Railways, the building carries a strong legacy. However, with rapid urban development in the city center and Sydhavnen districts, sports and recreation have often been overlooked in planning.
SLETHs transformation reorients The DGI House, linking it more effectively to the primary axis from Bruun’s Galleri to Sydhavnen. What was once a relatively closed-off area is turned into an inviting and vibrant public space. New corridors will pass through and around the building, ensuring better connectivity and open spaces. A new facade will redefine the building’s presence on Jægergårdsgade, making it a focal point rather than a backdrop. The surrounding urban spaces will be reimagined to enhance outdoor activity, with improved accessibility, new recreational areas, and a rooftop terrace.
The redevelopment of DGI House is structured in three key phases, each designed to create a stronger, active and more inclusive facility that meets the evolving needs of the city center.
The first phase, focuses on renewed energy and comfort, with upgraded design and lighting enhancements, renovated locker rooms and five new restrooms, along with sound-isolating the gymnastics hall, that transformed the large hall into two functional spaces.
The second phase introduced a vibrant new social hub, featuring an expanded kitchen, modernized restrooms, a new multipurpose hall, additional restrooms, and new meeting facilities. A brand-new café was introduced, which serves as a welcoming meeting point, fostering connections and a sense of community.
The future final phase three introduces the 3,000 m² Health Tower, an innovative sports and health center in the heart of Aarhus. The Health tower will redefine the entrance of the DGI House and expand key facilities, creating a more accessible and inviting space. Here a new main entrance will serve as a welcoming gateway, while new administrative and meeting spaces will enhance functionality. The sports and activity facilities will be expanded with improved locker rooms, and a new multipurpose hall will provide increased flexibility for activities. A rooftop terrace will add a unique dimension to the building, offering new opportunities for recreational activities, sports and social gatherings.
